Indian parrots have found a new way to get high! Find out how

Synopsis

They are extremely clever as they wait until the farmers expose the opium fields and then they swoop down silently to nibble the stalks off the flowers. The farmers have stated that these wild parrots have been eating off 10 percent off their crops.

Wild Indian parrots want to fly ‘high.’ Yes, you read that right. These Indian parrots have discovered a new way to get high on opium. They have been destroying the poppy fields of the farmers to satiate their opium addiction.

They are extremely clever as they wait until the farmers expose the opium fields and then they swoop down silently to nibble the stalks off the flowers. Once they get high, their senses go numb and many of these birds have been found dead in the field itself.

“Once they have their fill they sit on trees and sleep there for hours. Some of them can be seen circling or staggering before falling from the trees due to an overdose of opium,” says Kishore Kumar Dhaker, a poppy farmer in Sukwara village of Chittorgarh said.

The farmers have stated that these wild parrots have been eating off 10 percent off their crops and they have been issued a warning by the narcotics department.

"Usually, the parrots would make a sound when in a group. But these birds have become so smart that they don't make any noise when they swoop on the fields. The birds start chirping when they fly away with opium pods. We have tried every trick possible to keep the birds at bay but these addicts keep coming back even at the risk of their life,” Sobharam Rathod, a poppy seed farmer was quoted as saying by the Mirror.

"Like we keep an eye on them, but they also keep an eye on us. The moment you lower your guard, the army of parrots silently swoop onto your field and take away the bulbs."
