For 37 years, voters in Himachal Pradesh have not re-elected the ruling party for a second term. That trend continued in 2022, as the counting of votes for the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections put the Congress party back in the driver's seat. The BJP was unable to overcome the anti-incumbency factor. The stakes were higher for the Congress party, which had been on a losing spree for over two years. Currently, the party is in power only in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, both of which will face elections in 2023. Watch this space for the Himachal 2022 mandate as it unfolds...

Even before the first votes are counted in the Himachal Pradesh election, the Congress party has already begun behind-the-scenes activity to protect its newly-elected MLAs. Considering that a number of exit polls predicted a close battle in the state between the BJP and the Congress party, the Congress intends to shift its winning Himachal MLAs to resorts.
According to sources, the party intends to act quickly if the BJP is seen to be falling short of the majority.
The strategy was devised at a meeting held at the PCC headquarters, sources said, adding that the party wants to prevent the poaching of its MLAs.
Therefore, the winning Congress MLAs will be transferred from the state to resorts in Rajasthan or Chhattisgarh, where the Grand Old Party is still in power.
Sources further said that if nobody had a majority, the Congress party would try to form an alliance with either independents or AAP.

The Himachal Pradesh verdict will be keenly watched. If exit polls are to be believed, the political dynamics in the state, which has not given a ruling party a second term in the last 37 years, could change.
Powered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's personalised campaign and the party's slogan, "Raj nahin, riwaaj badlega", the BJP hopes to break the trend that has been going on since 1985.
In the 2017 assembly elections, the BJP won 44 seats and the Congress 21. The CPI-M had won one seat while two went to independent candidates.
