Gold biscuits worth Rs 12 crore seized from Siliguri; 3 arrested

Synopsis

A joint team of Darjeeling police and excise department arrested three persons with 130 gold biscuits worth Rs 12 crore. According to information received from police sources, each gold biscuit weighs 166 grams. A total of 130 pieces of gold biscuits recovered on this basis weighs 21 kg 580 grams. The gold biscuits had been smuggled into India through the Indo- Myanmar border and were being taken to Bihar from Assam.  

A joint team of Darjeeling police and excise department arrested three persons with 130 gold biscuits worth Rs 12 crore. 

The three accused have been identified as Shashikant Sankalp, Anil Gummadi and Mohammad Afroz. They will be produced in Siliguri court on Tuesday (November 10).

Darjeeling SP Santosh Nimbalkar said, “On the basis of secret information, the police searched a suspicious car on Monday (November 9) morning during a check on the Bengal-Bihar border. 65 biscuits of gold were recovered from a special belt tied in the waist of a person in the car. After this, the police brought the three along with the car to the Khoribari police station. The police started searching for the accused.”

“65 gold biscuits were recovered from a special belt tied in the waist of another in the car. In addition, the police received twenty thousand cash and several mobile phones from both,” he added

Among the accused, the car driver Mohammad Afroz (23) is said to be a resident of Tumbajot area of Matigada adjoining Siliguri town. On the other hand, Shashikant Sankalp (29) and Anil Gummadi (40) are said to be residents of Mohali, Maharashtra.

According to information received from police sources, each gold biscuit weighs 166 grams. A total of 130 pieces of gold biscuits recovered on this basis weighs 21 kg 580 grams. The market value of the recovered gold biscuits is estimated to be around Rs 12 crore.

According to police sources, the biscuits had been smuggled into India through the Indo- Myanmar border and were being taken to Bihar from Assam. The accused had booked a car from Siliguri to Chhapra.
