Former Justice Amitabh Lala dies at 70

Former Justice Amitabh Lala died on Monday (November 23) night at a private hospital near Bypass. He was 70 years old. 

Amitabh Lala was suffering from pneumonia for a long time. Recently, his son reported that the number of blood platelets in his body had decreased. Therefore, his condition was very critical.

In 2004, Amitabh came to the news headlines for banning rallies and processions on weekdays in Kolkata. He passed the order so that daily commuters do not face any difficulty to reach their work location on time. 

Once, Amitabh Lala was stranded on the road due to a CPM procession on his way to the hearing of an important case in the Calcutta High Court. Later, he went to the High Court and remarked that the procession meeting in Kolkata should be stopped on working days. 

CPM leader Biman Basu opposed this order and told Amitabh to leave the city. However, the veteran communist leader later had to apologize to the court. 

Amitabh Lala, a science graduate, studied law at Calcutta University. After joining the Calcutta High Court in 1975, he got a permanent post in 1997. In 2005, he joined the Allahabad High Court. He was also the Acting Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court in 2012. He was known for his judicial discipline inside the court and his liberal attitude outside the court.
