Fire at Gurugram power station halts Rapid Metro, services restored

Rapid Metro services in Gurugram, halted by a major power outage from a fire at a 220 KV power station, were fully restored. The outage, caused by an oil leak in a transformer, affected several sectors before the system was restored.

Rapid Metro services in Gurugram were fully restored late Friday night after a major power outage triggered by a fire at a 220 KV power station in Sector-72 disrupted electricity supply and temporarily halted metro operations across several parts of the city.

According to officials, the outage occurred after a fault in the main transformer at the 220 KV power station led to a fire, affecting the power supply in multiple areas.

What Caused the Outage?

Executive Engineer Anil Malik said the incident took place around 7:50 pm due to oil leakage in a current transformer. "This incident occurred around 7:50. There was an oil leakage in the current transformer that is 220 KVA. The blast happened right when the breaker was being cut, and a fire broke out here. This led to a blackout situation," Malik told ANI.

He added that power supply from the 220 KV sub-station to Sectors 52 and 56, along with five sub-stations, was affected, causing temporary suspension of Rapid Metro services. "As a result, the power supply from the 220 KV sub-station to Sector-52 and 56, including five sub-stations, was disrupted. The Rapid Metro service was also suspended along with it, although we had restored it around 8:25 pm. We have restored the entire system from our end so far. This incident was caused by thermal heating. The situation is completely under control," he said.

Residents React to Disruption and Restoration

Meanwhile, speaking to ANI, a local resident, Devender Singh, described the incident as unprecedented and praised authorities for restoring services. "If the power goes out, everyone will be worried about the loss. But I think this is a big incident. This is the first time it has happened in Gurgaon this season. The electricity was fully recovered at 11 pm. The authorities handled it very well; it should happen like this in the future too," he said.

Another resident, Anil Kumar Jain, highlighted the need for better power management and backup systems for public transport. "Look at the demand yesterday. It was at its peak. Capacity should be increased. Even though we do not need it, we still have ACs installed in our homes, and we set their temperature to 18 degrees. We as citizens should also think about how to use electricity as per our needs and capacity. Regarding the metro, it should be self-sufficient. They should have their own backup power. Why are they not doing this?" he said.
