Uttar Pradesh Cabinet minister Kamala Rani Varun passed away due to coronavirus in Lucknow

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Cabinet minister Kamal Rani, who was undergoing treatment for coronavirus at a Lucknow hospital, died on Sunday morning (August 2). She was 62.

Kamala Rani, minister of technical education in the state government, was admitted to a Rajdhani COVID hospital on July 18.

“The condition of minister deteriorated after infection in lungs. She was put on life support system. Despite the best efforts of doctors she passed away on Sunday,” said Director PGI professor Radha Krishna Dheeman.

She was known to be a prominent fighter for women empowerment in Kanpur’s Ghatampur from where she got elected in 2017.

Born on May 3, 1958, Kamal Rani Varun was a member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. She was also a member of Eleventh and Twelfth Lok Sabha.

From 1989 to 1995, Kamal Rani Varun was a member of Mahanagar Parishad, Kanpur. She was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996. From 1996 to 1997, she served as the member of the committee on Labour and Welfare and the Committee on Industry.

In 1998, she was re-elected to the Parliament for a second term. From 1998 to 1999, she served as the member of various committees including the Committee on Official language, Committee on labour and welfare and the Consultative Committee of Ministry of Tourism.

In her last posts on Twitter, Rani had retweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address from Smart India Hackathon and mourned the demise of Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh.

Meanwhile, chief minister Yogi Adityanath's today's visit to Ayodhya to review preparations for Ram temple foundation laying ceremony has been cancelled.
