Coronavirus: Record single-day spike of 38,902 COVID-19 cases, tally breaches 10.5 lakh

The highest single-day spike in cases comes a day after Dr VK Monga, the chairman of IMA Hospital Board of India claimed that community spread of deadly virus has started in India and the situation is quite worsening

New Delhi: With the highest single-day spike of 38,902 cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's total COVID-19 tally on Sunday reached 10,77,618, informed the Union health and family welfare ministry.

The death toll has gone up to 26,816 with 543 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours.

The health ministry said the total number of cases includes 3,73,379 active cases and 6,77,423 patients have been cured/discharged/migrated.

Maharashtra remains the worst affected by the coronavirus outbreak in the country. The total number of positive cases in the state has reached 3,00,937, according to the Union health ministry. The pandemic has claimed a total of 11,596 lives in the state so far.

Meanwhile, Mumbai crossed the grim milestone of one lakh cases with an addition of 1,186 new patients in the last 24 hours, the state health department said.

Tamil Nadu has become the second-worst hit in the country with 1,65,714 COVID-19 cases and 2,403 deaths. Followed by Delhi with 1,21,582 cases and 3,597 deaths, Karnataka (59,652 cases, 1,240 deaths), Gujrat (47,390 cases, 2,122 deaths), and Uttar Pradesh (47,036 cases, 1108 deaths).

Meanwhile, as per the information provided by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 1,34,33,742 samples have been tested for COVID-19 till July 18, of these 3,61,024 samples were tested yesterday.

The recovery rate stood at 62.86% this morning. India is the third worst-hit country by the pandemic after the United States and Brazil.
