Coronavirus: India’s COVID-19 tally surges past 11 lakh cases

India's coronavirus tally surged to 11 lakh cases this morning (July 20) after 40,425 new patients were registered in the last 24 hours, the country's biggest single-day jump in fresh infections

New Delhi: With the highest single-day spike of 40,425 new cases in the last 24 hours, India’s tally of confirmed coronavirus cases crossed 11 lakh-mark on Monday. The death toll, on the other hand, reached 27,497 after 681 fresh fatalities.

Of the total 11,18,043 cases, 3,90,459 cases are active and 7,00,087 are cured/discharged.

The recovery rate stood at 62.61% this morning. India is the third worst-hit country by the pandemic after the United States and Brazil.

The number of recovered COVID-19 patients exceeds India's active caseload by 3,04,043 as on Sunday with 6.77 lakh people having recuperated from the disease so far, the health ministry said.

Maharashtra continues to report the highest number of cases, followed by Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.

Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases at 3,00,937 followed by Tamil Nadu at 1,65,714, Delhi at 1,21,582.

According to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) 1,40,47,908 samples tested for COVID-19 up to 19th July. Of these 2,56,039 were tested yesterday.

Meanwhile, India’s Case Fatality Rate (CFR) has fallen below 2.5% for the first time on Sunday, according to a statement issued by the Union health ministry. The ministry attributes this reduction to the focused efforts of the Centre and State/UT governments on efficient clinical management of hospitalised cases.
