India recorded more than 1.57 lakh COVID-19 cases and 3,236 deaths from the virus in the first week of July alone
New Delhi: A spike of nearly 23,000 cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and 482 deaths in a single day pushed India’s overall case tally to over 7.4 lakh on Wednesday morning (July 8).
India reported a spike of 22,752 new COVID-19 cases and 482 deaths in the last 24 hours.
The number of positive cases in the country stands at 7,42,417 including 2,64,944 active cases, 4,56,831 cured/ discharged/ migrated and 20,642 deaths, the ministry of health and family welfare said in its latest update.
According to the Union health ministry, Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state reporting 2,17,121 coronavirus cases and 9,250 fatalities.
Tamil Nadu, the second worst-affected state from COVID-19 has a total of 1,18,594 cases and 1,636 deaths due to coronavirus.
While Delhi has a total of 1,02,831 COVID-19 cases including 3,165 deaths.
On Tuesday, India’s COVID-19 caseload increased to 7,19,665, while the death toll climbed to 20,160.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that a total of 1,04,73,771 samples have been tested for COVID-19 till date. Of these, 2,62,679 samples were tested on Tuesday.
Coronavirus cases have been consistently rising in India. While it took 110 days for coronavirus cases in the country to reach one lakh, it crossed the seven lakh mark in just 48 days. From 6 lakh cases to 7 lakh cases, India recorded 1 lakh coronavirus cases in 4 days.
Globally, India is now ranked below the United States and Brazil, the two worst-hit nations in the world.
