Coronavirus: India records worst single-day spike of 52,315 fresh cases

New Delhi: A record high single-day spike of 52,123 positive cases and 775 deaths was seen in India in the last 24 hours. Total COVID-19 positive cases stand at 15,83,792 including 5,28,242 active cases, 10,20,582 cured/discharged and 34,968 deaths, according to the health ministry's update.

The country's death toll has crossed the 35,000 mark. This was the seventh consecutive day when COVID-19 cases have increased by more than 45,000.

But on a positive note, the country recorded over 10 lakh recoveries. Ten lakh people have recovered from COVID-19 in India, the health ministry said.

Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Gujarat have the highest cumulative number of cases. However, infections have lately been rising rapidly in states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.

As Maharashtra crossed 400,000 mark in coronavirus cases, the state government, under its Mission Begin Again plan, extended the lockdown there till 31 August midnight.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Wednesday issued guidelines for the next phase of lifting lockdown restrictions in the country. The set of guidelines said that while more curbs were set to lift in areas outside containment areas, the lockdown in containment areas was extended till 31 August.

Social/political/sports/entertainment/academic/cultural/religious functions and other large congregations will still not be permitted. Also, schools, colleges and coaching institutions will remain closed till August 31, 2020.

The total number of COVID19 samples tested up to July 29 was 1,81,90,382 including 4,46,462 samples tested yesterday, said Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
