The Chhattisgarh High Court, on Thursday, convicted Amit Jogi, Ex MLA and son of former chief minister Ajit Jogi, in a case related to the murder of Ramavatar Jaggi.

Case Background and Legal Appeals

According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the case dates back to 2003 and pertains to the killing of businessman-politician Ramavatar Jaggi in Raipur at a time when Ajit Jogi was the sitting Chief Minister of the State. 28 people were convicted in the case by a special CBI court in the year 2007. However, the court had acquitted Amit Jogi by giving him the benefit of the doubt. CBI had gone in an appeal before the High Court of Chhattisgarh against this acquittal, which was set aside on grounds of delay. Later, CBI moved the Supreme Court, upon which the case was referred to the High Court last November after condoning the delay, the CBI said.

Earlier today, Satish Jaggi, son of Ramavatar Jaggi, expressed happiness after the Chhattisgarh High Court ordered the former Chhattisgarh MLA Amit Jogi to surrender within three weeks. "The Jaggi family welcomes this decision. We express our gratitude to the court. Today, my father has received a true tribute. The main accused in this case, Amit Jogi, has been asked by the court to surrender within 3 weeks. My father was murdered in 2003, and today the court has pronounced the sentence on the main accused," he said.

High Court's Directive

A division bench led by Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Arvind Kumar Verma set aside the 2007 trial court order that had acquitted Amit Jogi. The court has directed Amit Jogi, the son of Chhattisgarh's first Chief Minister, the late Ajit Jogi, to surrender within three weeks.
