Captain Amarinder Singh meets Amit Shah, sets off speculations

The meeting assumes major political significance as it comes just days after the Congress had unceremoniously removed him from the post of Punjab chief minister to placate Sidhu.

In a massive development, senior Congress leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence.

The development comes at a time when the Congress is riddled with infighting in Punjab with Navjot Singh Sidhu leading the banner of revolt.

The meeting assumes major political significance as it comes just days after the Congress had unceremoniously removed him from the post of Punjab chief minister to placate Sidhu.

The timing of this visit has sparked off speculations.

While stepping down, Captain Amarinder Singh had said that he felt humiliated by the manner in which the Congress had treated him.

He had made it clear that he was keeping his political options open and that he would soon decide on his course of action.

To recall, Captain Amarinder Singh had skipped the swearing-in ceremony of his successor Charanjit Singh Channi, making his displeasure over being sacked amply evident.

After Sidhu stepped down from the Pradesh Congress Committee president's post on Tuesday, Amarinder said his stand that the former was an unstable person who was incapable of leading the party.

If Captain Amarinder Singh decided to switch over to the BJP, it would deal a body blow to Congress just months before the elections in the state.

Besides, it would also question the actions of the party's top brass which had sided with Sidhu rather than with Captain who had been running a stable government in the state till the former started creating issues.
