A Pakistani intruder was shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) in Punjab’s Ferozpur sector during the intervening night of May 7 and 8, official sources said on Wednesday. The intruder was observed crossing the International Border under the cover of darkness and moving purposefully toward the border security fence. Despite being challenged by BSF personnel, he continued advancing, prompting the troops to open fire.
According to sources, the BSF acted swiftly and decisively, maintaining strict vigilance along the sensitive border stretch. The intruder’s body was recovered at daybreak and later handed over to local police authorities.
This development comes at a time of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that claimed the lives of 26 civilians. In retaliation, India launched precision military strikes under "Operation Sindoor" on nine identified terror targets across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir early Wednesday. Targets included the Jaish-e-Mohammad headquarters in Bahawalpur and the Lashkar-e-Taiba base in Muridke.
In the wake of these strikes, the government convened an all-party meeting on Thursday to brief political leaders on the objectives and aftermath of Operation Sindoor. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired the meeting, which saw participation from key Union Ministers including Amit Shah, S. Jaishankar, J.P. Nadda, and Nirmala Sitharaman.
Opposition leaders, including Congress’s Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, Trinamool Congress’s Saugata Roy (updated from Sandip Bandyopadhyay if required), DMK’s T.R. Baalu, AAP’s Sanjay Singh, Samajwadi Party’s Ram Gopal Yadav, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sanjay Raut, and NCP (SP)’s Supriya Sule, were present at the meeting. CPI(M)’s John Brittas, BJD’s Sasmit Patra, JD(U)'s Sanjay Jha, LJP (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan, and AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi also attended.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government is committed to keeping all political parties informed on national security matters, especially in light of evolving regional threats.
The high-level political engagement marks the second such meeting within a fortnight, the first being held on April 24, two days after the Pahalgam attack.
