Brain dead patient's organs airlifted from Kolkata to Hyderabad for transplantation

The organs of a brain-dead patient were donated to different hospitals amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time, the organs of a patient reached Hyderabad from Kolkata. The kidneys and skin of the patient were provided to SSKM hospital.


Kolkata: Successful organ donation took place amidst the coronavirus pandemic. For the first time, the organs of a brain dead patient reached Hyderabad. Multiple organs arrived at the SSKM and the city’s prominent eye hospital. The name of the patient was Piyushkanti Ghoshal. Thinking that Piyush would survive through others, his family decided to donate his organs.

Piyushkanti Ghoshal, 44, a resident of Uttarpara in Hughli, was admitted to the Institute of Neuroscience on Thursday (August 20) in critical condition with a brain tumour. He was kept under observation on ventilation as his physical condition was critical. Even after trying all possible methods, the young man was brain dead on Friday (August 21) night. After the doctors declared the young man dead, his family decided to donate Piyushkanti Ghoshal's organs.

The organ donation process started from Sunday (August 23).

Delegates from Rotor arrived at the Institute of Neuroscience in Mallick Bazar. After the surgery was complete in the middle of the night, the organ donation process commenced. The organs reached three hospitals through the Green Corridor at midnight on Sunday (August 23).

The organs were taken to Kolkata Airport through the Green Corridor with police assistance. The lungs were given to KIMS Hyderabad. The kidneys and skin were sent to SSKM hospital. The cornea was sent to Shankar Netralaya.
