"Boycott China" activists protest after India loses NSG membership

India's failed to gain entry in the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) despite support from the US due to a China-led opposition at a three-hour post-dinner meeting of the Nuclear Suppliers Group.  

India is not a signatory to the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and that was the ground used to thwart India's bid.

Now India blames China for losing out on Membership. A Hindu right-wing organisation,the Hindu Sena staged a protest burning posters of Chinese President Xi Jinping China and Chinese Manufactured products. The protestors accused China of blocking India's entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group, holding up on placard that read, "Down with China'' and "Boycott China"

India had sought NPT concessions on the grounds that it had a clean non-proliferation record.

Joining the NSG would give India access to technology that could help scale up nuclear power production thereby reducing India’s dependence on fossil fuel.  But despite Modi’s repeated attempts to convince Chinese President Xi Jinping to support India’s membership, China stood firm in its opposition.

Wang Qun, Director General of China's Department of Arms Control argued that if exceptions are allowed here or there on the question of NPT, the international non-proliferation would collapse altogether.

There’s still hope for India’s NSG membership to go through, with Mexico rising in support of India. At the suggestion of Mexico, it has now been decided that another meeting of NSG should be held before the end of the year to consider the criteria for allowing non -NPT signatories like India into the group.
