Synopsis

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey hit out at Congress, calling April 29 a 'festering sore day'. He cited Nehru's 1954 Panchsheel Agreement, which he said recognised Tibet as part of China, as a 'misdeed of the Nehru-Gandhi family'.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Wednesday criticised the Congress, recalling the Panchsheel Agreement under which India recognised Tibet as a region of China in 1954. Noting April 29 as a "festering sore day for India", Dubey also recalled the declaration to create Khalistan and Subhas Chandra Bose's resignation from the presidency of Congress. The BJP leader wrote, "The Dark Chapter of Congress. April 29 is a festering sore of a day for India because of the misdeeds of the Nehru-Gandhi family. On April 29, 1954, Nehru Ji signed the Panchsheel Agreement with China on this very day, raised the slogan 'Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai,' gave China a route to come and go as far as Kalimpong in West Bengal, and Tibet became the centre of Chinese rule from this day onwards."

Panchsheel Agreement Details

As per the agreement, China agreed to specify Yatung, Gyantse and Phari in Tibet as markets for trade for India, and in return, New Delhi agreed that trade may be carried out in Kalimpong, Siliguri and Calcutta (now Kolkata), according to customary practice. The agreement lapsed in 1962. In 2003, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government said that "the Indian side recognises that the Tibet Autonomous Region is part of the territory of the People's Republic of China." Post-2014, New Delhi has on several occasions engaged with the Tibetan government in exile in India.
