Rahul Bajaj is the grandson of Jamnalal Bajaj, an industrialist and prominent supporter of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi during India’s independence struggle.

Pune: Former Bajaj chairman Rahul Bajaj passed away in Pune on Saturday after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 83 years old. He was born on June 10, 1938 in Kolkata to Marwari businessman Kamalnayan Bajaj and Savitri Bajaj.

Bajaj is survived by two sons — Rajeev Bajaj and Sanjiv Bajaj and a daughter. His two sons are looking after his business conglomerates day to day affairs.

He was awarded with the country’s third highest civilian award — Padma Bhushan. 

Born in 1938, Rahul Bajaj was the grandson of the freedom fighter, Jamnalal Bajaj. He took over the rein of Bajaj Group in 1965 and stepped down in 2021 to become the chairman emeritus of the Group.

He also got elected to Rajya Sabha from 2006-10.  

Confirming about his demise, the Bajaj Group in a statement said, “It is with deep sorrow that I inform you about the passing away of Shri Rahul Bajaj, husband of the late Rupa Bajaj and father of Rajiv/Deepa, Sanjiv/Shefali and Sunaina/Manish. He passed away on the afternoon of 12th February, 2022 in the presence of his closest family members.”

He had pneumonia and cardiac issue. About a month ago, he was to the Ruby Hall Clinic. He was hospitalised since then.
