Your phone rings. You hear your brother, son, daughter, or a close friend on the other end. They sound completely panicked. They tell you, "I am in trouble, send money immediately." You hear their exact voice, so you transfer the money without a second thought. But trusting a voice on the phone is highly dangerous today. Cyber criminals use AI technology to clone human voices with shocking accuracy. They use this exact trick to cheat innocent people. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) strongly advises citizens to stay alert against these voice cloning scams.
The DoT explains that cyber cheats use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to copy the voice of someone you know. They call you pretending to be your family member or close friend. They create fake emergency stories like a road accident, a police case, or a hospital admission. They pressure you to send money instantly. You hear a familiar voice, you panic, and you transfer the funds without checking the facts. Fraudsters simply take advantage of your fear and urgency.
Scammers do not even need to hack your private data to create a voice clone. They easily extract voice samples from your social media reels, public videos, or random voice recordings. They can also misuse leaked private voice notes. They process these audio clips through advanced AI tools. The final output sounds exactly like the real person on a phone call.
Cyber criminals always try to scare you. They force you to make quick decisions. They might warn you that a delay will cause a huge problem or tell you to keep the matter a secret. You must never bow down to such pressure. You should ask the caller a personal question that only the real person would know. Families can also decide on a secret code word in advance. You can ask for this code word to verify the caller's identity during emergencies.
You can report any suspicious call or message on the Chakshu section of the Sanchar Saathi portal. This system allows you to flag fake communications easily. If scammers have already stolen money from your bank account, you must act fast. You should immediately call the 1930 cyber fraud helpline. You must also register a formal complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The police can track your money and block the transfer much faster if you report the crime early.
