Three years after he introduced 'Modi' mango, Uttar Pradesh's Haji Kalimullah - famously regarded as Mango Man - is now growing 'Yogi' Mango! This new variety from the orchards of Padmashri recipient, Haji is said to be more slender and beautiful. However, this variety is said to be a cross of 'Kaerala' and 'Dussehri' varities - naturally developed mangoes.
It is said that Haji Khalimulla hadn't christened the new variety of mango till a few visitors - who visited his orchard - suggested him to name it after UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. However, he is not yet sure how this new variety of mango tastes. He hopes that they will be distinct like the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.
Haji Khalimulla (74) has earlier named mangoes after Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. In fact, not just celebrities, but Kalimullah has named the mangoes after his ancestors too.
Kalimullah has been growing mangoes since 1975 and owns a mango orchard that is spread over five acres at Malihabad. Kalimullah is known for grafting and cultivating varieties of mangoes in his orchard. He is famous for growing 300 varieties of mangoes on a single tree. His unique style of farming has earned him the prestigious 'Padma Shri' award by the government. Ask him why names the mangoes after celebrities? "That's my way of making the legends immortal."
