105-year-old woman clears Class 4 exam, obtains 74.5% marks

Synopsis

105-year-old Bageerathi Amma passed her Class 4 exam and obtained 74.5% marks. She had stopped studying at the age of nine, when she was in class 3, to take care of her younger siblings.  


                  

Thiruvananthapuram: The 105-year-old Bageerathi Amma who scripted history when she appeared for her fourth standard exam last November, becoming the oldest learner of the Kerala State Literacy Mission (KSLM) has passed her exam with 74.5% marks.

She has six children and 16 grandchildren.

Bageerathi Amma hails from Kollam district's Parakulam. She had stopped studying at the age of nine, when she was in class 3, to take care of her younger siblings.

CK Pradeep Kumar, district co-ordinator of State Literary Mission said on Wednesday, "Bageerathi Amma has passed her exam with 74.5% marks. She is really an inspiration for others to continue their education," he said.

Her desire to continue her studies was fulfilled with the aid of officials of the Literary Mission, who helped her realise her dreams. CK Pradeep Kumar, district co-ordinator of Kerala State Literary Mission said, "The exams commenced on Sunday and finished yesterday. She is a real motivation for others who want to learn."

The Kerala State Literacy Mission is an autonomous institution under the General Education Department, Government of Kerala. The program’s main aims are to develop literacy skills through education, to enable learners to make use of their learning in their daily life and to ensure secondary-level education to the whole of Kerala and provide opportunities to each and every one interested in learning. The main beneficiaries of this programme are illiterates, neo-literates, school dropouts and those interested in lifelong education.
