Harish Rawat on Thursday said that Sidhu could be made the party president and a peace formula to ensure that the cricketer-turned-politician and chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh were on the same page had been worked out.

Congress's Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat, who was present in the meeting, told reporters later that he had "never said" Navjot Sidhu would be Punjab Congress chief. "Once Sonia Gandhi makes a decision we will let you know," Rawat said.

Besides media reports stating that Sidhu is likely to be announced as the Punjab Congress chief, there are also speculations of appointing two working presidents- a Dalit and a Hindu face.

The leadership is desperate to broker peace between Punjab Chief Minister Captain (Retd.) Amarinder Singh and Sidhu before the State goes to the polls early next year.

A war of wits played out in public, with separate meetings of the CM with loyalists, while Sidhu called on dissident ministers.

The Chief Minister had met Sonia Gandhi last week, after which he said he would accept "whatever decision is taken by the Congress high command".

The feud between Amarinder Singh and Navjot Sidhu, festering since the Congress won the Punjab election in 2017, has endangered the party's re-election bid next year.
