Mary Kom's Rio dream dashed, wild card entry denied

Synopsis

All hopes of boxing champion Mary Kom participating in the Rio Olympics have been dashed. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) denied her a wild card entry for the mega sporting event.

Earlier, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the ad-hoc committee which handles boxing in India had sent an official request to the IOC for a wildcard entry.

According to IOC rules, a wild card entry cannot be granted to countries which had more than eight boxers in last two Olympic games.

International Boxing Association (AIBA) ad-hoc committee chairman Kishen Kharsi confirmed the news yesterday.

Mary Kom had to resort to wild card entry as she crashed out of the World Championships in the second round last month.
