The reason for the attack is unclear. The incident comes as the nation is yet to recover from the shock of the gruesome beheading of history teacher Samuel Paty in a street in a Paris suburb.

Estrosi further posted, "Nice has paid too heavy a price in the same way as our country in recent years. 13 days after Samuel Paty (incident), our country can no longer be satisfied with the laws of peace to annihilate Islamo-fascism."

Speaking to the media, Estrosi said two people were killed inside the church while a third person who had managed to escape to a nearby bar was in critical condition.

Citing initial reports about the attacker shouting 'Allahu akbar' repeatedly as police nabbed him, Estrosi said that "the meaning of his gesture left no doubt".
