Team India's young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has landed in some serious trouble. He got aggressive on the field during the second Test against Sri Lanka. His fight with pacer Asitha Fernando, where he headbutted him with his helmet, could badly hurt his cricket career.
On day one of the match, Asitha Fernando clean-bowled Jaiswal, who was on 45. The bowler gave him a bit of a send-off. Jaiswal got angry, and instead of walking back to the pavilion, he went back to argue with Fernando. He didn't stop there; he went face-to-face and headbutted him. The Sri Lankan players had to step in to calm Jaiswal down and send him off.
The ICC and MCC rules are very clear. Attacking or physically fighting with another player is a serious 'Level 4' offence. If the Match Referee takes this seriously, Jaiswal could face a ban for 5 Test matches or 10 ODIs. The rule even has a provision for a life ban if the violence is proven to be extreme.
This isn't the first time Yashasvi Jaiswal has behaved like this on the field. During the 2022 Duleep Trophy, he got into a similar argument with a player named Ravi Teja. He ignored the umpire's warning, so his own West Zone captain, Ajinkya Rahane, sent him off the field as a disciplinary measure. The match referee is now reviewing the videos from the Colombo Test. Everyone is waiting for his decision. This aggression from a rising star like Jaiswal has now put his spot in the team in danger.
Even India's batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, has criticised Jaiswal's actions. Kotak said, 'The bowler might have said something in the heat of the moment. It's true Jaiswal shouldn't have gone that close. But these things happen on the field.' A war of words is common in big matches. The bowler celebrated aggressively, and Jaiswal could have just said something back and walked away. But even Indian fans are saying that getting so close and headbutting him with a helmet is just not acceptable.
