EPL 2021-22, Matchday 1 review: Tottenham Hotspur upsets Manchester City, Manchester United on top

The 2021-22 English Premier League is underway and is off to a decent start. While there were a couple of upsets, the rest of the matches produced favourable results, as we review Matchday 1.

The English Premier League 2021-22 went underway from Friday night, and it has been a conventional start to the tournament on the opening matchday. Along with a couple of upsets, the other matches presented positive results, as we offer the review from Matchday 1.

Brentford shocks Arsenal unsurprisingly
The opener began on Friday night with Arsenal travelling to newly-promoted Brentford. And yes, the Gunners was beaten 0-2, but it does not come as a surprise, as it has more or less been the tradition of Arsenal to goof up its opening game of the season. Nevertheless, the feeble season the Gunners endured last season seems to be continuing.

Manchester United hammers Leeds United
Undoubtedly, the biggest win during the opening matchday involved two mini rivals, as United plundered five against Leeds at Old Trafford, winning 5-1, thanks to Bruno Fernandes's hat-trick. While Leeds performed pretty well in the opening half and bouncing back to level terms in the second half, it only excited United. The latter displayed no mercy and soared to the top spot in the table on the opening matchday.

Leicester City edges past Wolverhampton Wanderers
Leicester looked to continue with its momentum from last season, and it eventually did as Brendan Rogers' men just managed to edge past Wolves at home 1-0, thanks to Jamie Vardy's sole goal in the 41st minute. As of now, it stays in the ninth spot.

Chelsea dominates Crystal Palace
In a mini London derby, Chelsea hosted Crystal Palace, and as expected, it was the former that had the upper hand throughout, registering a convincing 3-0 win. The visitor was never in the game or could match the level of the host, while the latter rose to the second spot in the table.

Liverpool bosses Norwich City
Liverpool travelled to Norwich with a mission, and it was successful, as it dominated the newly-promoted side 3-0, as expected. Consequently, The Reds has risen to the third spot and aims to maintain the consistency for a top-four contention.

West Ham United Hammers Newcastle United
Well, not precisely hammered, but Newcastle was indeed Hammered 4-2 at home. Although the host showed tremendous fighting spirit, playing at home in front of its crowd for the first time in nearly one and a half years, West Ham has been in a different level of late and plundered four against the Magpies' two. Consequently, the Hammers is placed fourth, for now.

Tottenham Hotspur hands opening shock to Manchester City
In the game of the matchday, Tottenham entertained defending champion City, which was expectedly a close contest. While many had expected City to be the favourite to win, Spurs displayed enough resilience. At the same time, Son Heung-min's lone goal in the 55th minute handed it the season's opening win, with the Cityzens losing three consecutive matches. While the host is placed tenth, the visitor lurks at 13th for now.
