Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s (Bimal Gurung faction) Roshan Giri on Sunday (November 29) has said that he will support West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the upcoming assembly polls in the state. The party had shown their support to the BJP in the last two elections.

Giri, general secretary of the faction headed by Bimal Gurung, alleged that the BJP cheated their faction and did not live up to any of its promises during their association from 2009 to 2020.

Speaking at a public gathering, Roshan Giri said, “We will support Mamata Banerjee in North Bengal. We want to see her as the third time Chief Minister as she keeps her promises.”

“However, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, we will support the party that will lend their support to the Gorkhaland issue," Giri added.

The GJM led by fugitive Gorkha leader Bimal Gurung in October quit the NDA and aligned with TMC, saying the BJP had “failed to find a permanent solution” for the Hills -- which had witnessed major unrest over demand for a separate state in 2017.

Roshan Giri also ruled out any reconciliation with the Binoy Tamang faction claiming that Gorkhaland Territorial Administration Chairman Anit Thapa and GJM leader Binoy Tamang have no base in the hills. Giri accused them of being involved in financial wrongdoings.

The assembly elections in the state are scheduled to be held in 2021.
