Coronavirus: India’s COVID-19 tally nears 3 million with 68.8 lakh fresh cases in single day

India has recorded more than 12 lakh fresh COVID-19 cases in August, higher than in any previous month and the highest count by any country during this month.

India's COVID-19 tally zoomed past 29 lakh, a day after it crossed 28 lakh, with a single-day spike of 68,898 infections, while the recoveries have increased to 21,58,946 on Friday, according to the Union health ministry data.

The total cases of coronavirus infections mounted to 29,05,823, while the death toll climbed to 54,849 with 983 new fatalities being reported in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The highest count of cases was again reported from Maharashtra, which logged its highest single-day spike in infections with as many as 14,492 recorded on the day. This was the first time that daily cases had crossed 14,000 in the state.

Besides Maharashtra, eight other states reported their highest single-day count of cases - Bengal (3,197), Punjab (1,741), Gujarat(1,175), Madhya Pradesh (1,142), Chhattisgarh (1,016 since Wednesday night, 916 on Thursday), Haryana (996), Puducherry (554) and Meghalaya (126).

Meanwhile, the case fatality rate in India has declined to 1.89% while the recovery rate has risen to 74.30%.

Testing in India has steeply increased to more than 9 lakh tests per day. This is bolstered with all StatesUTs testing more than 140 testsdaymillion population as advised by WHO (World Health Organisation), said ministry of health and family welfare.
