College, university campuses in West Bengal not to reopen immediately

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said on Wednesday (February 3) that colleges and universities in the state will not reopen campuses immediately. 

After a meeting with the Vice-Chancellors, Partha Chatterjee said, “The vice-chancellors urged the state government to allow institutions to conduct classes and exams of odd- semesters on online mode till March.”

“The varsities also communicated to the government about their inability to reopen hostels immediately due to the COVID-19 situation.”

In the meeting between the Vice-Chancellors and the Education Minister, it was also decided that the college laboratories will be kept ready for use by PhD researchers on case-by-case basis.

On asked about reopening schools for class 9 to class 12 students, Partha Chatterjee said, “We will issue specific notification about reopening of schools for higher classes at the appropriate time.”

"That notification will give every detail - about the measures and how many students will be allowed at a time," he added.

Spokesperson of the West Bengal Vice-Chancellors' Council (WBVCC) said that laboratories of the institutions will be opened for the benefit of research scholars. The classes and semester exams will continue to be held through virtual mode at present.
