Kajol entered the movie business at a very young age of 16. She made her Bollywood debut in 1992 with the criminal action drama Bekhudi when she was still in school.

Kajol is the granddaughter of actor-director-producer Shobhna Samarth, the great-granddaughter of Rattan Bai, an actress and singer from the 1930s, and the daughter of filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee and veteran performer Tanuja. She is also Rani Mukerji's and Ayan Mukherjee's cousin.

Kajol is the first actress in Bollywood to win a Filmfare award for her negative role in Gupt in 1998.

Kajol had doubts about shooting her iconic song from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, sung by Lata Mangeshkar, 'Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye' in 1995. However, she nailed the performance, and it became one of her most-loved tracks.
