Virat Kohli is to step down as Indian T20I captain after 2021 ICC World T20. Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar wonders that KL Rahul can be the vice-captain and groomed as the future Indian captain.

The Indian cricket fraternity is in shock after skipper Virat Kohli's surprising declaration to step down from the role following the ICC World T20 2021 next month. Meanwhile, as per speculations, Rohit Sharma seems like the obvious choice to replace him as the captain in the format, being a highly successful captain in the Indian Premier League for Mumbai Indians.

However, it has also led us to wonder who could be the new vice-captain of the side. While there are many promising candidates, legendary former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar feels that wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul can fit in the role.

Speaking to Sports Tak, Gavaskar said that with the Board of Control for Cricket in India looking ahead, it is a good thing that the future roadmap regarding Indian captaincy is being decided. As for Rahul, he said that he is a good performer.

Gavaskar pondered on the fact that his batting has been highly applaudable in England. He has been a consistent performer in the IPL and across formats on the international stage, making him the right candidate to be the deputy skipper, insisted Gavaskar.

Rahul has led Karantaka on quite a few occasions, having attained considerable success. He has been leading Punjab Kings since last season. Although he failed to lead the side to the playoffs, he can amend the errors this season, while the side is currently placed sixth, with six more games to go. Also, being a faithful performer across formats, he can definitely be the right candidate to lead India in the future across formats, and proper grooming of him should begin right away.
