Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ensure that the tournament is tax-exempted from the Indian government. As a result, the BCCI faces a challenging task ahead to convince the same to the government.

BCCI was previously handed a couple of deadlines, December 31 in 2019 and 2020, but has missed it all. While it races against time, if the Union Government decides against exempting the tournament from tax, BCCI would play a whopping ₹906 crore, reports IANS.

Furthermore, the ICC has reportedly set Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a back-up venue for the event. With a new deadline set by February, BCCI has already written a letter to the government, asking the competition to be tax-exempted, as a reply is awaited.

India previously hosted the tournament in 2016, which was won by the Windies. India would become the first venue to host the competition on multiple and consecutive occasions.
