India reports 273,810 new Covid cases and 1,625 fatalities in last 24 hours

Maharashtra, Delhi and Karnataka saw the biggest single-day surge in the last 24 hours. 

India on Monday reported 273,810 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the highest spike since the pandemic began.According to the Union Health Ministry, the country's Covid tally has shot up to 15,061,919 cases.The country also reported the highest-ever single-day spike in Covid-related deaths with 1,625 fatalities.The active cases in India stand at 19,29,329. A total of 129,53,821 people have recovered from the virus in India.

Maharashtra, Delhi and Karnataka saw the biggest single-day surge in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra reported 68,631 new infections followed by Delhi (25,462) and Karnataka (19,067).Out of Karnataka's tally, Bengaluru alone reported 12,793 cases.After Delhi's overall active case tally touched 74941, traders associations in the national capital announced that the Chandni Chowk market will remain shut till April 25.The Delhi Kirana Committee of Khari Baoli Market and the Chemical Merchant Association of Tilak Bazaar also announced closure of markets till April 21.

Sources said that more curbs, including weekday curfews, are likely to be announced in Delhi.Maharashtra, meanwhile, declared states of Goa, Kerala, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Gujarat as sensitive origins. Those travelling from these states will have to carry a negative RT PCR test report.They will be stamped and have to go under home quarantine for 15 days.
