Veteran Tamil actor Vatsala Rajagopal, a familiar face in Tamil cinema and television, passed away in Chennai on Friday, October 30, at the age of 93. She reportedly died due to age-related ailments, according to Tamil media reports.
Her mortal remains have been kept at her residence in Pallavaram, Chennai, for people to pay their last respects.
Although Vatsala entered the film industry relatively late in life, she went on to establish an impressive career spanning more than four decades. She appeared in over 400 films and several television serials, earning recognition for her memorable supporting roles, particularly as a grandmother.
Born in Thiruvananthapuram, Vatsala Rajagopal developed an interest in dance and theatre during her school days. After getting married, she moved to Chennai in 1953 and started working as a clerk at the Accountant General's office.
Interestingly, filmmaker K Balachander was a senior officer at the same office. Vatsala recalled this connection in a January 2024 interview with Dinamalar.
Her passion for performing arts eventually led her to join Rasika Ranga, a theatre group managed by cartoonist Sridharan. Her stage performances helped her gain recognition and eventually brought her an opportunity in films.
Filmmaker Mani Ratnam offered her a role in Roja (1992), starring Arvind Swamy and Madhoo. The film marked her big-screen debut when she was around 60 years old. She played Madhoo's grandmother, beginning a memorable second innings in the entertainment industry.
Vatsala Rajagopal went on to become a familiar presence in Tamil cinema, appearing in more than 400 films throughout her career. She was particularly appreciated for her natural performances in grandmother roles, often bringing warmth and humour to the characters.
Some of her notable films included Roja, Sathi Leelavathi, Anniyan, Rhythm, Winner, Pattiyal, Dhaam Dhoom, Mozhi and Kalyana Samayal Saadham. In Sathi Leelavathi, she was remembered for playing Ambujam Maami.
Her contribution was not limited to cinema. Vatsala also appeared in several popular Tamil television serials, including Chithi, Anandham, Mundhanai Mudichu and Vasantham. She also collaborated with filmmaker Balu Mahendra on his television anthology Kadhai Neram.
