Alia Bhatt started her career with Student Of The Year. She played the role of Shanaya Singhania, a college-going rich girl whose love for fashion and popularity is undying, while Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra played her love interest.

The film became a super hit at the box office, and Alia Bhatt became a star overnight. She later went onto appear in Highway, Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania and more.

By 2014, Anurag Kashyap had already made Gangs Of Wasseypur, Part 1 and 2. He decides to follow up his thriller about a missing child called Ugly.

Alia had made a brief cameo in Ugly. She appeared for a few seconds on screen as young Tejaswini Kolhapure briefly for a flashback scene related to her lead character.

Anurag had stated in many interviews that Alia resembled young Tejaswini; hence she played that cameo.
