Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings would be the first film involving Marvel's Asian superhero character Shang-Chi. It is slated to be released on September 3, 2021. Overall, it would be the 25th movie in Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has never failed to impress fans. In contrast, Disney has done a commendable job to create a loyal fan base and invest heavily in the Marvel movies.
With 'The Infinity Saga' phase of the MCU coming to an end with Avengers: Endgame, fans desperately wait for the next stage to get underway. Although Disney had announced big plans for the same, the ongoing pandemic has slowed things down.
One of the movies of the upcoming phase would be Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, based on Marvel's first Asian superhero character, Shang-Chi. On Monday, Dinsey shared a first look teaser of the same.
Simu Liu would portray the main character of Shang-Chi. As for the premise of the film, according to Wikipedia, "When Shang-Chi is drawn into the clandestine Ten Rings organisation, he is forced to confront the past he thought he left behind." Besides Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Meng'er Zhang, Florian Munteanu, Ronny Chieng and Dallas Liu are also among the additional cast in separate roles.
As the teaser indicates, it would portray Chi's childhood. He is a martial artist who is skilled and was trained during his teenage days by his father Wenwu, apparently to become an assassin. He left an assassin organisation called Ten Rings and travelled to San Fransico to lead an everyday life. However, the same past would come back to haunt him, as he would break away from his regular and finally use his trained assassin abilities against the allies of Ten Rings.
So far, the teaser has generated a positive response, with fans calling it the next level of Asian martial arts movie involving kung fu. While many have compared it to legendary martial arts movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, some also feel that it could fall in the lines of Keannu Reeve's famous The Matrix film series.
Shang-Chi would be preceded by Black Widow, based on famous MCU character Natasha Romanoff, portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, to be released on July 9 in theatres and Dinsey+ prime access. As for Chi, it would only be restricted to a theatre release initially.
