The latest advertising by apparel manufacturer Manyavar-Mohey has been a topic of discussion on the Indian Internet. The hashtag #BoycottManyavar started trending on Twitter, and the apparel brand's advertising features Bollywood star, Alia Bhatt.
Manyaavar is aimed at men's sherwanis and kurtas for wedding fashion in India, whilst the female version of the brand, known as 'Mohey,' is aimed at women's bridal fashion.

The current campaign, in which Bollywood starlet Alia Bhatt is depicted at a Hindu wedding 'mandap' awaiting the rituals before the marriage is finalised, emphasises how females in India are sometimes considered a burden and regarded as merely a liability to marry off. In the advertisement, Bhatt questions whether the practise of 'Kanya Daan,' or giving away girls at weddings, is something we should still be doing in the modern age.
