Indian actor Om Puri's great work in the world of cinema was highlighted during the 89th Academy awards night. His popular films like East Is East, Gandhi, City of Joy and Wolf were honoured at the ceremony in the "In Memoriam" montage.
The In Memorian montage was announced by actress Jennifer Aniston, who broke down while speaking about veteran actor Bill Paxton. Paxton died one day before the ceremony. The emotional actress pulled herself together and completed her speech before the performance started.
Om Puri was one of the many actors honoured in the annual montage. They included Carrie Fisher, Prince, Gene Wilder, Michael Cimino, Patty Duke, Garry Marshall, Anton Yelchin, Mary Tyler Moore, Curtis Hanson and John Hurt .

Om Puri was awarded the Padma Shri in 1990. Om Puri studied in Pune's famous Film and Television Institute of India and was a student at the National School of Drama, where Naseeruddin Shah was his fellow student.
Om Puri made his debut with the 1976 Marathi film Ghashiram Kotwal, based on a play by Vijay Tendulkar. Om Puri was also made the honorary officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to the British film industry.
