67 songs in 5-hour long performance: Singer Vijayalakshmi sets new world record

The singer kept the audience guessing throughout the marathon performance by switching from classical to filmy numbers and popular songs without pause. 

Renowned playback singer Vaikom Vijayalakshmi once again proved that nothing could stop her from dedicating herself to music. Despite being visually challenged, she crossed another rare feat on Sunday by setting a new world record and showed the world that she was ready to go any length for what she loves most- music.

In the presence of numerous music enthusiasts, friends and relatives, Vijayalakshmi broke the world record by continuously playing 67 songs on Gayathri Veena, (Ek Tantri Veena) a customised single-string instrument. She had crossed the existing world record when she completed 52 songs, but she was determined to set the tab high for others to follow and played on for over five hours.

Vijayalakshmi had recently hit the headlines by and for choosing music over married life. She said she took the decision on her own and had no regrets. Her fiance had allegedly prompted her to stop music career and seek the job of a music teacher. 

With many popular Malayalam film songs, Vijayalakshmi had rendered songs in Tamil and Telugu, including Bahubali.  The busy singer won two state film awards, including a special jury award, besides other prestigious awards in just five years after he started to playback singing.
