India vs England 2020-21: Shreyas Iyer ruled out of remaining ODIs; to miss IPL 2021 first half

Synopsis

Shreyas Iyer is a prolific middle-order batsman who plays for India. He is also the captain of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, as the side finished as the runner-up during the last season. However, a shoulder injury has ruled him out of IPL 2021 first half.

Indian middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the ongoing One-Day International series against England, played at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Iyer has suffered a subluxation (partial shoulder dislocation) as he was fielding during the opening ODI on Tuesday.

During the eighth over of the English chase, Iyer dived in at extra cover to save Jonny Bairstow's boundary. However, he landed awkwardly on his left shoulder and was in visible discomfort before being taken off the field by the physio, while he did not take the field any further.

Adding salt to the injury, Iyer would also not participate in the opening half of the upcoming Indian Premier League, reports ESPNCricinfo. He is the captain of Delhi Capitals, as the side finished the runner-up last season.

It is unsure of the Board of Control for Cricket in India would announce any replacement for Iyer. However, India has Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill's likes in the squad who can chip in for the remaining two ODIs.

Meanwhile, DC will have a headache considering Iyer being its captain and a prime top-order batsman. While a replacement for him is unlikely, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, the vice-captain of the side, is likely to handle the leadership duties until Iyer's return.
