Young Indian opener Shubman Gill knocked a sublime ton, as India was 188/2 in their first innings at tea on Day 3 of the fourth and final Test versus Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday. The hosts are still trailing the Steven Smith-led visitors by 292 runs., but appear to be progressing steadily, with the pitch still belter.
Gill (103 batting) and Cheteshwar Pujara (42) tailored a 113-run stand for the second wicket before the latter was trapped leg-before by off-spinner Todd Murphy. Australia had scored 480 in its opening innings. Earlier, skipper-cum-opener Rohit Sharma fell for 35 off the final delivery of the 21st over, pinnacling a 74-run stand along with Gill.
As for Gill, it was his second hundred in the format and his first playing at home. His maiden Test century came in Bangladesh last year. It is also his second international ton at this venue, having slammed his maiden Twenty20 International hundred the previous month. Overall, it is his ninth First-Class (FC) century. He has passed 110 in this tie and is currently unbeaten on his best Test knock.
