Adani Green Energy sets global record with 5,051 MW capacity addition

Adani Green Energy added a record 5,051 MW of renewable capacity in FY25-26, the highest global greenfield expansion outside China. This boosts its total operational portfolio to 19.3 GW, with much of the new capacity at the Khavda plant.

Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) added 5,051 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity in the financial year 2025-26. This milestone represents the highest greenfield annual capacity expansion globally by any company, excluding China, as per an Adani media release.

The addition has increased the company's total operational portfolio to 19.3 gigawatts (GW), reinforcing its market position in India's renewable sector. The capacity added during the fiscal year includes 3,409 MW of solar, 686 MW of wind, and 956 MW of wind-solar hybrid capacity.

Spotlight on Khavda Renewable Energy Park

A significant portion of this expansion was commissioned at the world's largest renewable energy plant in Khavda, Gujarat. The project at Khavda covers 538 square kilometers, an area five times the size of Paris. AGEL has already installed a cumulative capacity of 9,413 MW at the site, progressing toward a planned 30 GW by 2029.

"Our addition of over 5 GW of new capacity marks a watershed moment for India's renewable energy sector, placing the country firmly on the global map of leading the clean energy transition. It marks a significant leap in accelerating the country's shift to a low-carbon economy and strengthening energy security," said Sagar Adani, Executive Director, AGEL.

Energy Storage and Technological Innovations

The company also brought online 1,376 megawatt hours (MWh) of battery energy storage systems (BESS) at the Khavda location. This capacity was commissioned within eight months of starting work to support grid stability and renewable integration.

The Khavda project utilizes advanced bifacial solar modules and 5.2 MW wind turbines, which are among the most powerful onshore units globally. Additionally, the site employs waterless robotic cleaning systems to maintain operational efficiency.

Carbon Offset and Future Targets

The new 5 GW capacity is expected to offset approximately 10 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. The company's total operational portfolio is projected to result in an annual carbon offset of 36 million tonnes.

Sagar Adani noted that the team has "consistently proved that ultra large-scale renewable energy deployment is not only possible but also executable. This milestone strengthens our progress towards our target of 50 GW by 2030, while continuing to deliver sustainable and inclusive growth through renewables and energy storage solutions."

Sustainability and Industry Accolades

For the second consecutive year, NSE Sustainability Ratings and Analytics ranked the firm as India's top sustainability performer in the power sector. The company also secured the first rank in the Global Top 100 Green Utilities list for 2025 by Energy Intelligence. (ANI)
