At least 25 people died after record rains inundated central China. Floods struck an underground subway system, damaging dams and riverbanks, causing landslides and building collapses. President Xi Jinping described the situation as “extremely severe” and added that flood control measures have entered a “critical stage”.
About 200,000 residents were evacuated in Zhengzhou. Soldiers led rescue efforts in the city of more than 10 million people.
