Colorado supermarket shooting: Cop among 10 killed, suspect arrested

Live-streamed video earlier had shown a white middle-aged man -- shirtless and seemingly covered in blood -- detained by police and led from the supermarket.

Boulder, Colorado: At least 10 people, including a police officer, were killed in a shooting at a supermarket in the Boulder area of the US’ Colorado state on Monday, the police said, adding that one suspect has been arrested.

The shooter is being held in custody and was injured, said Michael Dougherty, district attorney for Boulder County, located 30 miles (50 kilometers) northwest of the state capital Denver.

Among those dead was "heroic" police officer Eric Talley, 51, who was the first to respond to the scene at a King Soopers supermarket, said police chief Maris Herold.

Victims’ families were still being notified so their names weren’t released, Dougherty said.

“This is a tragedy and a nightmare for Boulder County, and in response, we have cooperation and assistance from local, state and federal authorities,” Dougherty said.

According to police officials cited by news agency Reuters, they had few immediate details of the shooting and no known motive for the violence, which unfolded at about 3pm at the grocery store in the Table Mesa area of Boulder, a city at the eastern foot of the Rockies about 28 miles (45km) northwest of the state capital of Denver.

According to video footage cited by Reuters that was broadcast on local television, a shirtless, bearded man in boxer shorts was seen handcuffed and being taken out of the store, before being placed on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance. The man in custody appeared to have a bloody leg and was limping as he walked, the agency reported.

Law enforcement vehicles and officers massed outside the store, including SWAT teams, and at least three helicopters landed on the roof in the city that’s home to the University of Colorado and is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Denver.
