The Ukrainian pair made a tremendous comeback after going down 5-1 in the second set to win the tie-breaker 7-6.
The Ukrainians then took the third set 10-8 in a tie-breaker to win the match.
When Sania took to the Ariake tennis court, she became the first female athlete to represent India at the four Olympics. The 34-year-old entered the Tokyo Olympics on the basis of her injury-protected world ranking of number 9.
