Paris Olympics 2024: IOC looks to have 50% male and female athletes as a part of 'Generation Equality'

Synopsis

The next edition of the Olympic Games is being held this year in Tokyo. At the same time, things would move to Paris in 2024. Meanwhile, the International Olympic Council is focusing on having an equal number of athletes from all genders.

Things are taking shape as the build-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is on in full flow. However, the 2024 Paris Olympics planning has also begun, with the International Olympic Committee pondering initial planning and decisions.

According to the latest update, IOC is wondering about having an equal number of athletes across genders for the 2024 event. It focuses on bolstering gender equality ahead of Paris, while Tokyo, too, would witness gender-balanced participation from the athletes.

"We can all agree that the current crisis presents many challenges to sport and gender equality at large. That is why, now more than ever, we must ensure that resource allocation continues to be put towards girls and women's sport and that we guarantee equal access and opportunities for girls and boys to play sport in a safe and inclusive environment. We are committed more than ever to accelerating progress within the Olympic Movement by continuing to lead by example and establishing concrete targets," said Kirsty Coventry, IOC's Athletes' Commission chairperson, in a statement.

Besides the athletes, the IOC is also mulling, having about 30% women in leadership and decision-making bodies. Also, Tokyo Olympics would be the first instance where all the 206 contingents would have twin (male and female) flag bearers.
