Lionel Messi agrees to two-year contract extension with Barcelona: Reports

Synopsis

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has made a name for himself by playing at Barcelona throughout his career. While he looked set for an exit following a couple of low-grade seasons, he looks set to extend his stay at Camp Nou for a couple of more years.

Lionel Messi has been in the headlines of late, owing to his uncertain future at Barcelona. Following a couple of low-grade and unsuccessful seasons with the Catalan, Messi was highly linked to a move away from Camp Nou, as his contract ended following the season's conclusion.

Although he was linked to a move to English champion Manchester City or French giant Paris Saint-Germain, it looks like he is staying with Barca for now. According to a report by Cadena Cope, Messi has agreed to a two-year extension with the Catalan, while he is satisfied with the pay structure proposed in the offered deal.

The update comes a day after the club roped in Messi's Argentine teammate Sergio Aguero, as the latter ended a decade-long career with Manchester City. Aguero had also affirmed that Messi is likely to stay at Camp Nou, having held discussions with him before signing up with Barca.

"I speak with [Messi] every day, but I can't tell you what about. The last message was him congratulating me on my signing. I've known him since I was a kid, but training with him every day, because the national team isn't that often, is going to be much easier," he reckoned.

Earlier, club president Joan Laporta had also confirmed that talks regarding Messi's contract extension were going on smoothly and expressed his confidence in the Argentine extending his stay at Camp Nou. "Talks are ongoing with Messi's people. As I have said, they're going well. We hope to keep making progress," he had said.

"[Messi] is showing a lot of understanding and wants to stay and have a competitive team that wins trophies. The sooner we have a decision, the better, of course, but we're not in a rush," he had added.
