Jose Mourinho is a Portuguese manager who has won twin UEFA Champions League titles. He has managed numerous top clubs across Europe. AS Roma is currently managed by fellow Portuguese Paulo Fonseca.

Legendary Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has been roped in as the Italian giant AS Roma manager. He would be taking charge of the club next season, i.e. 2021-22. It would be his second stint in Italy after he managed Inter Milan nearly a decade ago.

Roma is currently managed by fellow Portuguese Paulo Fonseca since 2019 and is scheduled to leave the club at the end of the ongoing season. He has not won a single title with the side, while the side is currently placed seventh in the Serie A and is struggling for a European spot. Meanwhile, Roma looks set to miss out on the UEFA Europa League final spot, trailing 2-6 to Manchester United from the semis opening leg in Manchester.

As for Mourinho, he last managed English giant Tottenham Hotspur. The side is currently being managed by interim manager Ryan Mason and is sixth in the Premier League, struggling for a top-four finish.

Following Mourinho’s appointment, Roma president and vice-president jointly said in a statement, “We are thrilled and delighted to welcome José Mourinho into the AS Roma family. A great champion who has won trophies at every level, José will provide tremendous leadership and experience to our ambitious project. The appointment of José is a huge step in building a long-term and consistent winning culture throughout the club.”

“When José became available, we immediately jumped at the chance to speak with one of the greatest managers of all time. We were blown away by José’s desire to win and his passion for the game: no matter how many trophies he has won, his primary focus is always on the next one. He possesses the knowledge, experience and leadership to compete at all levels,” said Roma’s General Manager, Tiago Pinto.

Meanwhile, Mourinho was thrilled to be a part of the legendary club with a great legacy, as he reckoned, “Thank you to the Friedkin family for choosing me to lead this great club and to be part of their vision. After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together, we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.”

“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season. In the meantime, I wish Paulo Fonseca all the best and I hope the media appreciate that I will only speak further in due course. Daje Roma!”

Mourinho has managed numerous top clubs that includes FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid and Manchester United. He is a two-time UEFA Champions League winner, with Porto and Inter, while he also led Chelsea to three EPL titles, his domestic record while managing any side.
