Italy’s hopes of ending their World Cup exile were shattered once more as Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated them 4‑1 in a penalty shootout during Tuesday’s playoff final in Zenica. The match had ended 1‑1, but Italy faltered from the spot, extending their run of failures to three consecutive tournaments.
Four‑time champions Italy had already missed the last two World Cups at the playoff stage, their last qualification dating back to 2014. Bosnia, meanwhile, celebrated only their second appearance at the finals, joining Canada, Qatar and Switzerland in Group B.
Italy struck first through Moise Kean in the 15th minute, capitalizing on a poor pass from Bosnia keeper Nikola Vasilj. Nicolo Barella set up Kean, who fired a stunning shot into the top corner. However, Italy’s momentum was halted when Alessandro Bastoni was sent off in the 42nd minute for a last‑man foul, giving Bosnia renewed belief.
Despite Gianluigi Donnarumma’s saves to deny Ivan Basic and Nikola Katic, Bosnia equalized late on. Haris Tabakovic scored in the 79th minute, pouncing on a rebound after Donnarumma had kept out Edin Dzeko’s header.
In the shootout, Italy’s Pio Esposito blasted over and Bryan Cristante hit the crossbar, while Bosnia converted all four attempts. Esmir Bajraktarevic sealed the win, sparking wild celebrations inside Bilino Polje Stadium.
Kerim Alajbegovic, who had scored the decisive penalty against Wales in the semi‑final, once again showed composure, calmly converting his kick against Italy. “I knew that I’d score the penalty regardless of who the goalkeeper is,” he said, praising the atmosphere and vowing to celebrate with fans.
Bosnia manager Sergej Barbarez hailed his side’s character, noting their “brutal calmness” under pressure. The victory was especially sweet for Bosnia, who had endured repeated playoff heartbreak in past campaigns.
