Hull City marked their return to the Premier League in memorable fashion by securing their first-ever top-flight victory over Manchester United with a 2-0 win at the MKM Stadium.
Playing in the Premier League for the first time since the 2016-17 season, Hull made an immediate impact as Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute after capitalising on poor defending from a corner. Sergej Jakirovic's side doubled their advantage before half-time when Nobel Mendy found the back of the net in the 38th minute, guiding a free-kick delivery past United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Manchester United dominated possession after the break and introduced Marcus Rashford in an attempt to turn the game around, but Hull's disciplined defensive display kept the visitors at bay. Bryan Mbeumo came closest to reducing the deficit for United, but his effort was denied by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.
United started the match positively, with Mbeumo forcing an early save from Tzolakis, while Matheus Cunha also tested the Hull defence. However, the hosts soon grew into the contest and created several chances before taking the lead. Oli McBurnie's header was saved by Lammens before the Hull goalkeeper made another stop to deny Regan Slater's effort. However, Ajayi reacted quickest from the resulting corner to put Hull ahead.
The Tigers continued to threaten and extended their lead through Mendy, who converted Slater's dangerous free-kick delivery.
Despite controlling much of the second half, United struggled to break through Hull's compact defence. Mohamed Belloumi came close to adding a third for the hosts, while substitute Cody Drameh also narrowly missed a late opportunity. Hull held firm in the closing stages to secure a clean sheet and three points from their opening Premier League fixture, joining defending champions Arsenal at the top of the table.
