England held by Russia as fans go on a rampage

Synopsis

In the backdrop of intense violence triggered by unruly fans, England's domination of their opening game against Russia was laid to waste in the dying moments as Vasili Berezutski headed in a 92nd-minute equaliser in Marseille.

England had earlier taken the lead through Eric Dier, whose  73rd-minute free kick curled into the top left corner for a stunning goal.

After manager Hodgson chose to leave the in-form Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy on the bench, it was Tottenham Hotspur's Dele Alli and Harry Kane who orchestrated proceedings in the middle, only to be denied in extra time.

Fans of the teams had provided a bloody backdrop to the match, with bottles and cafe chairs flying across Marseilles ahead of the game.

At least 34 were injured - one critically - according to the police.
